Murano Walking Tour
Reach the entrance of San Donato Basilica in Murano to embark on a guided walking tour to the island of Murano, also known as the Glass Island, which houses the world renowned Venetian Glass factories.
Start the tour with a visit to Basilica of San Donato itself, founded in the 10th century. Observe the splendid interiors containing rare mosaics and the unique Romanesque style in the lagoon. Move further to explore the preserved treasures of the Church of San Pietro, built in 1511. Housing brilliant works of art by Tintoretto and Bellini, this church is the proof of the island’s wealth.
Listen to your guide as he tells you historic details of Murano becoming the sole production house of glass, after a decree by the Republic of Venice in 1291. La Serenissima learnt the unique art of creating and shaping glass from the Roman refugees. The exclusivity of this art was acknowledged in 1605, when a Golden Book of master glassmakers was created, with inscriptions of the greatest craftsmen of those times.
Walk ahead to find Murano’s last church, the Santa Chiara that was founded as an Augustinian monastery in 1231 and went on to become a convent for the Franciscan order of Santa Chiara restored in 1519. Military General and First Emperor of France - Napoleon had put a ban on this church’s religious role, transforming this destination into a principal glassmaking site. Learn about man’s relationship with glass since prehistoric times. The experienced guide will navigate you through the following stages – making glass, glass and people, glass and the home and lastly glass and the table.
